Site Indexing

Once the site is live, we put it on the fast track to being indexed by the major search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. We use the success of our own sites to help your site to be recognized in the search engines. If you are not indexed, your site will not come up for any search queries. Once your site is in the index, the search engine then returns to your site to "read" as many pages as it can. Once this occurs, then you will start to see better listings for your various search terms as time goes on.

As we mentioned in the Linking Strategy section, the search engines send out crawlers (they also call them "bots" or "spiders") to find websites for their index. The search engine index is basically a giant list of sites that the crawler has visited, and when you do a search, the words you type in are compared to the sites listed in the index. The list of pages that come up for that search are the results of that comparison, in a nutshell.

So, the more pages that the search engine crawler crawls, the more potential pages are in the index. This means you could have multiple pages listed for one query, or different pages that come up for different queries (you don't always go to the home page from a search engine).
