Optimizing Your Website Copy

Balance the sales copy with the search engine copy

Good search engine optimized copy is really just copy that makes sense for the human reader. But there has to be some balance. After you do keyword research, you will find yourself with a huge list of terms that you want to work into the copy. Remember, this is why we suggest having as many pages of good copy on your site as possible. This way you have a chance to spread all those quality keywords out over multiple pages to capture a lot more searches.

Unfortunately, there is no one way to instruct people on writing good website copy. The web is a very subjective place and it is a very populated place. You can't possibly expect to please everyone with what you present on your website, but the words make the site.

Here are some general suggestions for writing effective web copy:
  • Search engines can spell now, so mind your grammar, punctuation, and spelling (at least run your spellcheck).
  • Write in sentences or use bullet lists.
  • Use active verbs and not passive ones because they are more commanding and persuasive.
  • Try to keep copy clean and concise.
  • Break up text blocks with graphics, bullet lists, sub-headlines, etc.
  • Target specific keywords on each page.
  • Let the keywords/keyphrases fall into your copy naturally.

Keyword Density?
Keyword density is the number of times a specific keyword appears in your copy. There is no specific keyword density that guarantees better search engine listings, and if anything, it varies. The keywords should appear in the copy naturally, and if you write about a specific topic, chances are the keyword density will be in the right area without having to pack in extra words where they don't really fit.

If you really want to get scientific about your keyword density and find out what terms people are looking for, here are some great tools to use. Check out these tools for yourself, or you can have us do the work for you.
